The following story is based on interviews I had with Len in the Summer of 2005. I was intrigued by the fact that Len had survived both Dunkirk and the battle for Europe after the Normandy landings. The chances of survival were small, so I felt that the story had to be written.

Len has said that when told, few people believed his story, he was just an ordinary person drawn into a conflict between nations and political ideology.
Given that the events happened many years ago, the information is as accurate as possible.
